Why did you choose to study Mathematics at Queen Mary?
I've always loved the logic, problem-solving, and elegance of maths - it felt like the perfect way to challenge my mind and build strong analytical skills for whatever came next.
Queen Mary stood out for its strong reputation in mathematics, vibrant campus in London, and diverse community. The location was ideal too, being in the East End offered great access to the city while keeping that university feel.
What did you most enjoy about your programme?
The intellectual thrill of tackling complex problems and seeing concepts click into place. The mix of pure and applied topics kept things engaging, and the small-group tutorials allowed for real discussion.
What are you proud of from your experience at Queen Mary?
I'm proud of persevering through a demanding degree and graduating with solid foundations that I still draw on today. Building confidence in my abilities during those years was a big personal win.
Which modules did you enjoy the most and were there any academics that
had a strong influence on shaping your time and studies here?
I particularly enjoyed modules like calculus and probability; they built my logical thinking. Dr Rainer Klages' lectures stood out for their clarity and enthusiasm; they made complex ideas accessible and inspiring, and really influenced my appreciation for the subject.
What you have learned during your studies, how did that relate to your
professional experience after you graduated?
The analytical mindset, problem-solving, and logical reasoning from maths have been invaluable in starting, growing and scaling my business, Boost Education. The discipline of breaking down hard problems helped hugely in business decisions.
What was especially helpful? Was there anything you would have liked
to learn in view of your job(s)?
Overall, I was happy with everything the programme offered, but looking ahead, I'd be particularly interested to see how AI is used in mathematics in the future; whether in research, theorem proving, conjecture generation, or personalised education tools.
Were you a member of any societies or did you attend any industry events
during your time at Queen Mary? If so which and what did you gain from
them?
I wasn't a member of any formal societies, but together with some peers, we qualified for an entrepreneurship course run at Queen Mary. We won the course competition and were invited to pitch our business idea in front of real investors. That experience was incredibly valuable; it gave me my first taste of presenting ideas
under pressure, receiving feedback from professionals, and thinking about turning concepts into real ventures, which later helped spark my interest in founding Boost Education.
What professional career did you pursue after graduating from QMUL,
and what is your current position?
After graduating, I completed a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics and taught in schools, then moved into the private tutoring industry. In 2009, I founded Boost Education, a tutoring service specialising in personalised maths, English, and science support. I'm currently the Founder and CEO, leading our team as we grow our network of centres and online offering across the country and plan international
expansion.
What's one piece of advice you'd offer to someone considering studying
your programme at Queen Mary?
Go for it! Queen Mary is a truly great university, and studying Mathematics there will be one of the best decisions you can make. You'll be immersed in a vibrant, diverse environment in the heart of London, where you'll meet incredible people from all walks of life, form lifelong friendships, and enjoy fantastic social events and
campus life.
The professors genuinely care about your success; not just in getting a 1st degree, but in developing you as a person ready to thrive in life beyond academia. Maths is a real problem-solving course that builds an unbeatable growth mindset, teaching you how to approach challenges logically and creatively. Those skills open doors to so many industries and careers.
