Profile

I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of the Arts and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). I also serve as a Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the School. Before joining Queen Mary in early 2023, I lived in South Korea for over two decades, where I worked primarily as a Teaching Professor at Seoul National University.

Teaching

I mainly teach and convene on the MA TESOL programme in the School of the Arts. I also convene on the science and engineering foundation year and the pre-master’s programme.

My PhD supervision is in the area of Higher Education research, particularly language education, English-Medium Instruction (EMI), multilingualism, internationalisation, social justice, and language policy.

Research

Research Interests:

I am a higher education researcher with a strong interest in multilingualism and language education, particularly in university settings. My research is informed by critical sociological perspectives and explores how language practices in education are shaped by the dynamic relationship between individual agency and institutional structures. This work spans English-Medium Instruction (EMI), TESOL, internationalisation, multilingualism, social justice, and language policy in Higher Education.

My current research is expanding to examine the experiences of international students in the UK Higher Education sector, alongside broader questions of multilingualism in global universities.

I also serve as a co-convenor of the Society for Research in Higher Education (SRHE) Multilingual University Network.
