Research in the Department of International Education addresses some of the most pressing questions facing language, education and communication in global and multilingual contexts. Our work brings together expertise in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, language education and educational technology to advance inclusive, research-informed and internationally engaged education.
Our research examines how language, communication and education interact with social, political and cultural change across diverse global settings. Areas of expertise include multilingualism, language policy, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, intercultural communication, language pedagogy and English-medium education.
We also explore digital literacies, AI in education, teacher education, educational reform, health communication and the relationships between language, identity, culture and social justice.
Staff contribute to international research agendas through publications, conferences, interdisciplinary collaborations and sector partnerships. Our work engages with current debates in higher education, language education and applied linguistics, shaping professional practice and policy within and beyond the university.
We are active in professional organisations including the British Educational Research Association, the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language and the professional association for English for Academic Purposes.
