Diagnostic Tests

If you wish to join a beginner module - labelled “[Catalan/ Chinese/ French/ German/ Portuguese/ Russian/ Spanish] Introductory” and “[Arabic/ Chinese/ Japanese] I (a), you do not need to show your proficiency level in your chosen language. Enrol for a beginner module if you have zero knowledge or know only a few words or phrases.

If you have existing knowledge in the language you want to study, please check the information about language levels to decide which module is suitable for your level. 

You can also use the following diagnostic tests to check your level. Upon completion of the test, you will get your results, together with advice about which module to enrol for.

ARABIC DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Arabic Language and Culture 1b (LAN4052), take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Arabic Language and Culture 2a (LAN5051), take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Arabic Language and Culture 2b (LAN5052), take the Intermediate level test.

CATALAN DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Catalan II Intensive (CAT5200), take the Lower Intermediate level test.

CHINESE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Chinese Language and Culture 1b (LAN4082), take the Lower Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Chinese II Intensive (CHI5200), take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Chinese III (CHI6200), take the Intermediate level test.

FRENCH DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for French I Intensive (FRE4202) (Level 4) or French II Intensive (FRE5206) (Level 5), take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for French I (FRE4200) (Level 4), take the Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for French II (FRE5202) (Level 5), take the Upper Intermediate level test.

GERMAN DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for German I Intensive (GER4205) (Level 4) or German II Intensive (GER5203) (Level 5), take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for German I (GER4204), take the Intermediate level test.

JAPANESE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Japanese Language and Culture 1b (LAN4042), take the Post-beginner level test.

SPANISH DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Spanish II Intensive HSP5202 (Level 5), take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Spanish I HSP4201 (Level 4), take the Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Spanish II HSP5201, take the Upper Intermediate level test.
