Profile

Mr. Mohamed Thaha is a Colorectal Surgeon–Scientist specialising in colorectal and anal cancers, with particular expertise in the surgical management of complex and recurrent disease. He holds an Honorary Consultant appointment in Colorectal Surgery at the Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, where he served as Lead Surgeon from 2015 to 2019.

His early academic career included a prestigious NES/CSO Scotland Research Training Fellowship (2000–2003) and a SHEFC Clinical Lectureship in Surgery (2003–2009) at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School, University of Dundee, under the mentorship of Professor Robert JC Steele. During this time, he completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics (2003) at the Health Economics Research Unit, University of Aberdeen, and was later awarded a PhD by the University of Dundee in 2010.

In 2010, he joined Professor Sir Norman S. Williams’ team at Queen Mary University of London as Senior Colorectal Fellow, before being appointed Senior Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery in 2011. Alongside his clinical practice, he has established a strong academic profile, combining surgical expertise with translational research to advance innovation in colorectal cancer diagnostics and therapeutics.

In addition to his academic and clinical roles, Mr. Thaha is an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur and MedTech Venture Builder at the London Institute of Healthcare Engineering, King’s College London. He is co-founder and CEO of CE-Track, Queen Mary University of London’s pre-spin-out venture dedicated to commercialising wearable, AI-driven localisation and tracking technologies for robotic capsule endoscopes.

Through his dual role as an academic surgeon and translational scientist, Mr. Thaha bridges surgical innovation, clinical practice, and entrepreneurial development, with the overarching aim of improving outcomes for patients with colorectal disease.

Research Interests:

At the REACH Lab, National Bowel Research Centre, Blizard Institute, Mr. Thaha leads research into biomarkers, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic technologies, including the development of novel capsule endoscopy platforms for early cancer detection and treatment.
