On April 1st 2026, the German section in the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature (MLCL) at QMUL hosted a highly engaging and memorable evening with Writer in Residence Mithu Sanyal.

Held in the BLOC Cinema in the ArtsOne Building, the event brought together staff, students, and guests for a reading from Sanyal’s novel Antichristie, presented in a specially prepared English translation. This author reading was followed by a wide-ranging and thought-provoking conversation with the author, as well as a lively discussion and Q&A with an engaged audience, both moderated by Professor Angus Nicholls.

The evening was distinguished by its combination of intellectual depth and an open, informal atmosphere. The conversation proved both stimulating and enjoyable, prompting a lively exchange of ideas on race, identity, and cultural power that extended well beyond the formal session.

Just a couple of days before her author reading, Dr Mithu Sanyal was awarded the prestigious Heinrich Mann Prize in Berlin, placing her in the distinguished company of writers such as Stefan Heym, Heiner Müller, and Christa Wolf.

Discussions continued after the formal programme, with many participants moving to a nearby pub to carry on the exchange in a more informal setting until closing time, further underscoring the event’s success in fostering a vibrant academic community.

The Department is also grateful to the Deutscher Literaturfonds for generously supporting the Writer in Residence programme at the Centre for Anglo-German Cultural Relations (CAGCR) at QMUL.
