qLegal students connect with Bloomberg professionals in speed mentoring series

Bloomberg welcomed qLegal students to its London offices for a second speed mentoring event in March 2026, building on a partnership that gives students direct access to professionals with a broad mix of expertise from across the organisation.

Speed mentoring brings students face-to-face with practitioners across different teams and seniority levels. Each conversation lasts ten minutes before rotating to a new mentor pair, each with a different background and practice area, gaining a breadth of perspective that would be difficult to replicate in a more traditional setting.

qLegal and Bloomberg first piloted this format in November 2025, bringing together qLegal students with professionals from Bloomberg's Legal, Risk, Compliance, Product Oversight and CISO departments. The range of functions represented gave students an insight into how legal, risk, and compliance operate across different parts of a large organisation, from regulatory interpretation and operational risk to information security and business process oversight.

The session was warmly received by students and Bloomberg alike. Students left "wishing it had lasted longer", and many noted how much they "valued the candour of the professionals in the room". Encouraged by the response on both sides, qLegal and Bloomberg agreed to organise a second event, this time with a smaller group of students to allow for more focused and in-depth conversations.

Each student took part in five rounds of ten-minute conversations with different mentor pairs, covering everything from career paths and day-to-day life in legal, risk and compliance roles to practical advice on applications, interviews and making the most of early career opportunities.

Students left with new perspectives and a clearer sense of the profession. As one put it: "I started off a little hesitant, but seeing how candid and approachable the Bloomberg mentors were made me feel so much more at ease. It was a truly eye-opening experience."

Bloomberg's Mia Motiee, legal counsel and EMEA pro bono lead, reflected on the partnership: “Our EMEA team has built a strong relationship with Queen Mary University of London over the years, and our volunteers enjoy working with the students and mentoring them in both clinical and mentoring sessions."
