Shadow Garden: A multisensory reinterpretation of Miao paper-cutting

Laser-etched acrylic, scented candle, mixed media installation object, 2026. Inspired by traditional Miao paper-cutting practices from Guizhou, China.

Shadow Garden explores how traditional visual languages can be translated through light, shadow, scent, and spatial atmosphere. Inspired by Miao paper-cutting traditions from Guizhou, the work transforms hand-cut patterns into shifting projected shadows through laser-etched acrylic and candlelight.

Rather than presenting heritage as a static object, the project considers how craft can move into contemporary sensory experience. Through changing light, scent, and reflection, the work invites a slower and more immersive encounter with cultural memory. Positioned within the context of law and aesthetics, the project reflects on how traditional forms continue to evolve through reinterpretation, material transformation, and everyday use.
