Call for Student Applications: STRIDE Programme 2026

Queen Mary invites UK fee-paying undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds at Queen Mary to apply for the STRIDE Programme. Gain research experience, training, and a £500 per week stipend. Apply by 16th February

Queen Mary is proud to announce the opening of the Summer Training Research Initiative to Support Diversity and Equality (STRIDE). This program aims to provide research opportunities and financial support to students from underrepresented groups during the summer months. As part of our commitment to fostering inclusivity and equal opportunity, STRIDE offers paid research experiences to students who may require additional support to pursue their studies. 

Programme Details 

  • Full 8-week period between Monday 8th June and Friday 30th July 2026.  
  • Students will engage in an 8-week research project under the guidance of a supervisor in their chosen discipline. You can find the details of each research project on our STRIDE 2026 Call for Projects webpage.  
  • Additionally, participants will undergo a program of training and development opportunities alongside their research. 
  • Selected students will also receive a stipend of £500 per week for the duration of the program. 
  • The programme is a full time programme and students must commit to undertaking the programme in its entirety.  

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Open to UK fee-paying undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds. 
  • Applicants must identify as Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, or Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller. 
  • For the 2025 programme we are particularly interested in recruiting Queen Mary Undergraduates from the following ethnic groups.  Students from these groups are eligible for ring-fenced studentships: 
  • Black British, African and Caribbean 
  • Bangladeshi 
  • Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller groups 
  • We are also particularly interested in receiving applications from students who are: Care leavers, those with primary caring responsibilities, those who are first in family to attend university, those who were eligible for free school meals, or otherwise underrepresented in the university community. 

Students must: 

Applicants must be in their second or third year (or part time equivalent) of study at Queen Mary University.   

Students must not: 

  • Be in the first year of study at Queen Mary.  First year students are not eligible to apply. 
  • Have failed any module for which examination was taken before their application. 

We invite applications from students who: 

  • Self-identify as Black, Black British, Caribbean, or African. 
  • Are first-generation university students, eligible for free school meals, or otherwise underrepresented in the university community. 
  • Have not failed any module for which examination was taken before their application. 

Application Process 

Interested students can apply for projects through the online application form.

  • Applications should include a statement explaining why participation in the programme is desired and how it will benefit the applicant. 
  • Applicants must also specify their interest in the particular research project they wish to participate in. You can find the details of each research project on ourSTRIDE 2026 Call for Projects webpage. 
  • Selection will be based on academic engagement, the statement of benefits derived from the internship, and alignment with the chosen research project. 
  • Applications close at 4pm on Monday 16th February 

Outcome Notification 

Supervisors will be informed about applications to their projects by Friday 13th March 

We will ask supervisors to rank the applicants to their projects.   

Students will be notified of the outcome of their application by Friday 20 March.
