EECS Women Higher Education Network (WHEN)

Mission

EECS Women in Higher Education Network (WHEN) can play a crucial role in establishing a strong community for individuals identifying as women and provide opportunities for exchange among academics at all levels – from PhD students to research assistants, postdoctoral fellows, to academics. The network will contribute to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Balanced gender representation improves working culture, supports a broader range of viewpoints and, therefore, leads to more creative ideas and innovation. This is particularly relevant for the fields traditionally underrepresented by women, such as computer science and engineering.

Our goal is to create an environment for open communication and collaboration, enabling our community to address current challenges and potentially influence policies and practices within EECS and the Science and Engineering Faculty. The network will also allow for more visible role models and mentors, particularly benefiting early-career academics.

WHEN has been featured as a case study for the newly created Gender Equality Directory of Good Practice and Research. Thanks for featuring it as part of the resource!

Vision

We are convinced that the most open discussions and natural professional collaborations occur with the bottom-up approach. Therefore, first, we plan to organise an initial participatory workshop to define the objectives and activities of the EECS WHEN. We will analyse the needs/expectations of academics regarding the EECS WHEN using professional moderation. This user-centred approach will address real challenges in the women’s research community. Within this event, we also plan to extend our core organising team by encouraging additional members to join. We will enable online access for all events for women who cannot participate in person but still need to benefit from the networking.

Second, we plan a series of networking events featuring speakers renowned in the field of Computer Science and Engineering. The talks will be followed by networking events, which provide an opportunity for informal discussions.

We are building this initiative with the support of the ERIC Fund (1st round 2023/24 & 2nd round 2024/25) and ERICA fund (2026/27) as a pilot project, which can potentially develop further. In the future, EECS WHEN plans to expand its functions to include additional support for early-career academics and women mentorship programs for students.

WHEN has been interviewed by Aurélie Leroy for the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science News: Empowering women in tech at Queen Mary: the story behind WHEN. Thanks for featuring the network following Ada Lovelace Day!

Lines of Flight: An evening of poetry and music with Jasmina Bolfek-Radovani and Martin Delaney @ Performance Lab, C4DM Studios – Thursday 14 May 2026, 7:00–8:30 PM

To attend, please register to the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lines-of-flightan-evening-of-poetry-and-music-tickets-1987008579149

Date Thursday 14 May
Time 7.00–8.30 pm
Location Performance lab & G2 (Engineering building)

‘Lines Of Flight’ is a collaboration between Jasmina Bolfek-Radovani and Martin Delaney. It began in 2022 as Martin Delaney’s experiment in creating music through randomisation and has expanded to include lines of multilingual poetry (in English, French and Croatian) and vocal performance by Jasmina Bolfek-Radovani, with additional contributions from multi-instrumentalist Clive Bell.

A line of flight or line of escape (French: ligne de fuite) is a concept developed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. In its artistic sense, it represents rupture, breaking the “grid”; for instance, a melody that turns random or a multilingual poem that stutters in-between language can be seen as “taking flight” from their original forms.

Duration of the performance: approx. 30 min. Drinks & nibbles will be served afterwards.

Bios:

Jasmina Bolfek-Radovani is a London-based interdisciplinary artist & poet born in Zagreb. Over the past decade, she has developed a multi-facetted practice rooted in her multiple cultural backgrounds & media; her projects take on different modes, from published text works to live collaborative performance. Her latest multilingual poetry project, Alphabet, engages with the Arabic script and calligraphy, exploring her maternal Algerian/French heritage, and familial history.

Martin Delaney is a musician, composer, visual artist, and writer. His latest EP ‘Sort Of A While’ is available now. He is currently using VR to create and perform music in 3D spaces. Martin is also a music technology educator and published horror writer.

Pilot group coaching programme led by Claire Revell – April-July 2026, six 90-minute in-person sessions

We are pleased to invite you to participate in a pilot group-coaching programme that Claire Revell will be delivering this year. The programme will run from March to July and will consist of six bi-weekly 90-minute in-person sessions (dates and times to be confirmed). The group will be limited to a maximum of eight participants.

What can you expect from the programme?
Coaching offers structured time and space to reflect, learn, and develop, helping you build deeper self-awareness and practical strategies for achieving personal or professional goals. Group coaching enhances this experience through peer support, shared learning, diverse perspectives, and increased accountability. It also helps build connection and community.
The programme will be shaped around a core theme identified by the group, along with related sub-themes for the 6 sessions agreed in advance. We will finalise these through an initial group session followed by short 1-to-1 meetings with each participant.
Timeframe
  1. 2 February: Deadline for expressions of interest.
  2. By 9 February: Participants selected (first-come, first-served if more than eight apply) and notified.
  3. Late February: In-person group meeting to introduce the programme and agree the overarching theme.
  4. By mid-April: Individual meetings to explore personal goals and identify priority issues to shape the six sessions.
  5. Late April: First group-coaching session.

Next steps
If you are interested in participating, please email c.revell [at] qmul [dot] ac [dot] uk by Monday, 2 February.

Her research interests include zero-touch networks, the intersection of ML and IoT in the context of sustainable development goals, and IoT-driven digital twins. In this regard, she has published in the areas of sustainable energy, smart mobility, and privacy-preserving e-health. As part of her industry research collaboration efforts, Mona has established a ground-breaking project that uses optical fibre systems for the detection and classification of active travel – a robust, scalable, and privacy-preserving method that informs smart city and transportation planning. She is the director of the ‘Digital Twins for Sustainable Development Goals’ research lab at QMUL, where she attracted the first multidisciplinary core team to further the studies in this area. Mona was awarded the title of N2Women Rising Star in Computer Networking and Communications in 2022. She is also a steering committee member of the IEEE Women in Engineering of the UK and Ireland affinity group.
Dr. Aisha Abuelmaatti Lecturer at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London, and the Programme Director for BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Management (ITMB), and the Deputy Programme Director for L7 Degree Apprenticeship. She is also a member of the Sustainability Committee and the Employability and Placements Committee.
