Two EECS academics have been named among the top 100 Computer Science researchers in the UK. Professor Sean Gong, Professor of Visual Computation and Queen Mary Turing Fellow, has been ranked in the top 10. A pioneer in computer vision, machine learning and video analysis, Professor Gong founded the Queen Mary Computer Vision Laboratory and his research - spanning object recognition, person re-identification and video analysis - has been widely applied in public safety, forensic analysis and smart cities. He also co-founded spinout company Vision Semantics Ltd, whose technology is used by police forces internationally.
Professor Arumugam Nallanathan, Professor of Wireless Communications and founding head of the Communication Systems Research (CSR) group, also features in the top 100. His research focuses on next-generation wireless networks, including 6G, the Internet of Things, and machine learning for wireless communications. He has published more than 500 technical papers and is a Fellow of IEEE and the IET, as well as a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher.
Dr Yongxin Yang has also been recognised as a Rising Star of Science for the second year in a row, in recognition of his work in machine learning and its applications in finance and medical genetics.
These achievements form part of a broader recognition of Queen Mary academics across multiple disciplines in the 2026 rankings, with colleagues from Law, Mathematics, Medicine and Materials Science also featuring among the UK's top 100 researchers in their respective fields.
