Tara Al-Haddad

Tara Al-Haddad is in her 2nd year of studying Computer Systems Engineering and will be graduating in 2027.

Why did you choose to study your programme and why Queen Mary?
I chose Computer Systems Engineering because I was interested in both software and how systems work at a deeper level. I didn’t want to focus on just coding - I wanted to understand how everything connects, from hardware to applications. Queen Mary stood out to me because of its strong engineering programmes, diverse community, and its location in London, which offers great access to industry opportunities.

What do you most enjoy about your course?
I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of the course. Whether it’s programming, debugging, or understanding new concepts, there’s a real sense of achievement when things start to come together. I also like that the course is quite practical and encourages independent thinking.

What are you proud of from your experience at Queen Mary?
I’m proud of my ability to balance my studies and my extracurricular commitments. I’m proud to say that I have been able to successfully be part of two society committees as well as student ambassador, meanwhile perform well in my coursework and examinations.

Which modules do you enjoy the most and are there any academics that have a strong influence on shaping your time and studies here?
I particularly enjoy modules that involve programming and systems design, as they allow me to apply what I’ve learned in a more hands-on way. The teaching staff have been supportive and knowledgeable, and their guidance has helped build my confidence and understanding throughout the course.

Are you a member of any societies or do you attend any industry events during your time at Queen Mary? If so which and what do you gain from them?
I’ve attended tech-related events and talks during my time at Queen Mary. These have been useful for gaining insight into the industry, understanding different career paths, and developing a clearer idea of the skills employers are looking for.

What kind of careers/employability support do you get during your studies? There is a good range of careers support available, including CV workshops, interview preparation, and career fairs. These resources have helped prepare for internships and future job applications.

What are you hoping to do after graduation?
After graduating, I hope to work in the tech industry, ideally in a role related to software engineering or consulting, where I can continue developing my skills and contribute to meaningful projects. Or, I’ll keep studying and start collecting degrees!

What's one piece of advice you'd offer to someone considering studying your programme at Queen Mary?
Stay consistent and make the most of the resources available to you. The course can be challenging at times, but keeping up with the content and practising regularly makes a big difference. Working on personal projects alongside your studies is also a great way to build your skills and confidence.
