The future of the Welfare State in an age of environmental catastrophism

When: Thursday, November 16, 2023, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Where: David Sizer Lecture Theatre, Bancroft Building, Mile End

At this event, Professor Colin Hay (Sciences Po) will present his new Renewal essay on the future of the Welfare State in an age of environmental catastrophism.

To mark the publication of 'The Welfare Issue' of Renewal, we are delighted to be joined by Professor Colin Hay (Sciences Po and Director of the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute) to discuss his essay, 'The "New Orleans effect"', and explore the future of the Welfare State in an age of environmental catastrophism.

In his essay, Colin Hay sets out to change the political debate about the future of the welfare state - one still partly based on our understandings of challenges and 'risk' from the past. Welfare states have long provided different systems of protection and insurance against certain risks. As we enter a new age of human-generated environmental catastrophe, Professor Hay argues welfare states may be asked to insure us against major challenges, including the consequences of climate change.

This event is open to all and we hope that it will be of interest to political scientists, political economists, and think tank researchers, in particular.

This event will be held in the David Sizer Lecture Theatre in the Bancroft Building at Queen Mary, University of London, which is number 31 on this map of the Mile End campus. Doors will open at 6.15pm and we aim to start at 6.30pm sharp.
