Hoffmann Eitle Prize awarded for best Queen Mary LLM essay in European Law of Patents

Hoffmann Eitle, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in Europe, has award the annual prize for best essay in LLM European Law of Patents for students studying at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), Queen Mary University of London.

On Tuesday 9 June 2026 annual the Hoffmann Eitle Prize was awarded to LLM student Chia-Ling Chen by Hoffmann Eitle Partner Dr Kei Enomoto. Chia-Ling’s essay critically assessed the significance of the United Kingdom Supreme Court decision in Unwired Planet International Ltd and another v Huawei Technologies (UK) Co Ltd and another UKSC 2018/0214, paying particular attention to the extent that the decision achieves an appropriate balance between the interests of Standard Essential Patent (SEP) owners and implementers on licensing terms that are fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND).

Professor Duncan Matthews, Director of Research at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, and Dr Apostolos Chronopoulos, Convenor of the LLM European Law of Patents module 2025-26, thanked Hoffmann Eitle for this continued support for legal education at Queen Mary University of London, and congratulated Chia-Ling Chen on her outstanding achievement and an excellent essay.
