Jon Miller Scholarship Terms and Conditions
Please read through the terms and conditions of the Jon Miller Scholarship before making an application.
With the support of construction specialist law firm Fenwick Elliott LLP, the School of Law will offer one (1) scholarship to a student beginning their studies at Queen Mary in September 2026. This scholarship is named after Jon Miller, a former partner at Fenwick Elliott and member of Queen Mary’s alumni community. Jon sadly passed away in 2024, and this scholarship has been set up in his name to support a student for the duration of their time at Queen Mary.
Scholarship benefits
The Jon Miller Scholarship will be awarded each year to one (1) first-year LLB student, who will receive an annual bursary of £1,500, subject to certain conditions. The recipient will also receive careers support from Fenwick Elliott via a mentor who will be available to discuss opportunities in the legal industry and be offered the opportunity to arrange work experience placements with the firm each summer and/or Easter.
The recipient will receive the initial payment during their first year of study, with the scholarship to be renewed in each subsequent year of study provided the renewal criteria below are met.
Please note that all shortlisted applicants will be offered the opportunity to arrange work experience placements at Fenwick Elliott.
Eligibility
Applicants must fulfil the following criteria to be eligible for the Jon Miller Scholarship:
- They must be eligible for Home fee-status, as assessed by Queen Mary Admissions.
- They must hold a conditional or unconditional offer of a place on an LLB programme at Queen Mary University of London beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year.
- They must be residents of one of the following London boroughs:
- Barking and Dagenham
- Hackney
- Havering
- Newham
- Redbridge
- Tower Hamlets
- Waltham Forest
- They must come from a household whose income is less than £20,000, as assessed by Student Finance England. All students are assessed as a matter of course during the enrolment process; the School of Law will confirm eligibility with Queen Mary’s central finance team before the award is made.
Selection process
All potentially eligible applicants with Home-fee status will be notified when the application process opens. Anyone wishing to submit an application will be asked to fill out an online application form, which will include a brief personal statement of up to 300 words.
Shortlisted applicants will be asked to answer a further question, to be set by Fenwick Elliott, and to attend an interview with the representatives of the firm. The interview panel will include one member of the School of Law, however, the final decision on the award of the scholarship will rest with the representatives of Fenwick Elliott.
All shortlisted applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process within two weeks of the completion of the interviews. Should the scholarship winner hold a conditional offer, their scholarship cannot be fully confirmed until such time as their entry onto their respective LLB programme is confirmed (specifically, upon receipt of results which are deemed acceptable for admission). Should the scholarship winner hold an unconditional offer, their scholarship can be fully confirmed at the point of notification.
Fenwick Elliott and the School of Law reserve the right to withhold the scholarship in any given year in the absence of an appropriate candidate.
Renewals
Recipients of the Jon Miller Scholarship are entitled to renew their scholarship in each subsequent year of study, provided they have fulfilled all of the following renewal criteria:
- A pass in all modules, with an overall average 2:1 grade (60-69%).
- An attendance record of 90% or above.
At the conclusion of the annual examination boards, recipients will be contacted with confirmation of whether or not they have met the renewal criteria.
Students who have not satisfied all of the above criteria will be considered by the School of Law’s Scholarships and Bursaries Committee, in conjunction with Fenwick Elliott, on a case-by-case basis and are welcome to submit details of any mitigating circumstances.
Applicants who are admitted onto the LLB English and European Law or LLB Global Law programmes will not receive the scholarship in their third year (the year spent abroad at a partner institution). Students who transfer onto the LLB Law in Practice will not receive the scholarship in their third year as this is a paid internship. Students who interrupt their studies will not receive the scholarship during the period of interruption, but are eligible for renewal upon their return, provided they have met the renewal criteria.
Marketing
Recipients of the Jon Miller Scholarship may be asked, on an annual basis, to provide publicity materials, such as a brief update/report or photograph, which can be shared with Fenwick Elliott and the School of Law marketing team, to be used, unless the recipient has a specific objection, for various marketing activities. Similarly, recipients may be asked to share their thoughts on their time at Queen Mary and discuss the impact that this scholarship has had on them. This information, with their consent, may be used by Fenwick Elliott, the School of Law, or Queen Mary for various publicity purposes, donor and alumni communications and fundraising materials.
