Professor Tyler Kelly discusses LGBTQ+ inclusion in STEM on the Foundation for Science and Technology podcast

Professor Tyler Kelly, Professor of Pure Mathematics and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow, recently appeared on the Foundation for Science and Technology podcast to discuss LGBTQ+ inclusion in STEM, mentorship, and the importance of creating research environments where everyone can thrive.

During the conversation, Kelly reflects on the growth of LGBTQ+ STEM, the professional network they co-chair, which began in 2013 as an informal community on social media. What started as a way for LGBTQ+ scientists to connect and share their enthusiasm for research has developed into an international network supporting researchers across science, technology, engineering and mathematics. 

Kelly explains how the organisation has evolved over the past decade, bringing together researchers through workshops and networking events, increasing the visibility of LGBTQ+ people in STEM through interviews and public engagement, and advocating for greater inclusion across the sector. 

The podcast also explores a pioneering mentorship programme for LGBTQ+ academics in the mathematical sciences and statistics. The initiative pairs mentors and mentees to discuss career development alongside the experiences and challenges that can come with being LGBTQ+ in academia. The discussion emphasises that creating supportive research cultures benefits both individuals and the quality of research itself, enabling people to do their best work when they feel included and valued. 

Looking ahead, LGBTQ+ STEM is hosting their 2026 LGBTQ STEMinar, which will continue to provide a welcoming space for researchers to share their work, build connections and celebrate LGBTQ+ contributions to STEM.
