At the Actuarial Society, we have closed on yet another successful year as a Queen Mary society. Having been founded in 2023, we have continued to develop and evolve what we offer the students at Queen Mary to not only further the actuarial identity at this great institution, but also to allow our members to connect with professionals in the industry that can give them the confidence and advice they need to start their professional careers.

When looking back at this year, it has not been a year without challenges. When running our society, there were more stumbling blocks than we perhaps anticipated given our previous experiences. However, thanks to the great level of resilience and professionalism that is present in our committee, we have been able to:

  • Deliver our first ever office visit to NFU Mutual in Stratford-upon-Avon.
  • Strengthen our connections with internal societies such as the Banking and Finance Society (BFS), Women of STEM (WoSTEM) and Women in Finance and Economics (WIFE).
  • Establish external connections with organisations such as the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).
  • Sustainability Board and Staple Inn Actuarial Society (SIAS).
  • Host workshops into CV development and public speaking.
  • Connect our members with even more actuaries and professionals.

Ultimately, our society has been able to give our members the platform to continue their development and growth at Queen Mary, having complete knowledge of what they need to navigate the ever-evolving actuarial and professional landscape. We have seen members of our society grow in confidence when it comes to finding those first opportunities, with their knowledge of what the actuarial industry is looking for increasing as their skill set expands.

Whether you are interested in the actuarial field or simply would like to connect with like-minded, driven individuals, then please do join our society in the new year. We already have events that are in the works such as speaker events with a new, more diverse range of actuaries, as well as plans to expand our career-focused events and information that we can offer for you. Our society is a beacon and welcome home to all those who want to find their people and establish themselves in the actuarial and financial industry with confidence, while having fun in socials along the way.

To all the committee members, external speakers, society members and other people at Queen Mary who have made our society and this year as successful as it has been, we thank you greatly for making this year the success that it was. We look forward to seeing what the society can achieve going forward into the new academic year and beyond under new committees in the years to come.
