Queen Mary celebrates International Women’s Day with first-ever Hackathon
Queen Mary’s School of Mathematical Sciences hosted its first Hackathon for female and underrepresented gender students, celebrating International Women’s Day with a beginner-friendly, skills-focused event.

Over two days, students took part in introductory workshops, formed teams, and developed projects from scratch. The event concluded with presentations and awards recognising innovation, impact, and design.
The event began with a series of introductory sessions covering Python, Git, and Vibe Coding, helping participants build the skills needed to start their projects. After forming eight teams, students began working on their ideas, continuing development into the second day.
Day 2 included further project work and a talk on AI and Cybersecurity, before teams presented their projects. Each group demonstrated how they approached their challenge, showcasing a range of techniques and creative solutions developed in a short time.
Five teams received awards, including Best Overall Presentation, Best Corporate Viability, Largest Social Impact, Best Design, and Most Promising Research Impact.
The Hackathon highlighted the rapid development of new skills and fostered an inclusive environment for students to explore technology. We look forward to building on this success with more events in the coming months.
