The visit marked the arrival of 26 Iraqi students beginning master programmes this autumn in Dental Technology, Experimental Oral Pathology and Minimally Invasive Dentistry.
The students have joined Queen Mary with support from Iraqi government scholarships, facilitated through the Higher Committee for Education Development in Baghdad, reflecting the University’s commitment to widening access to world-class dental education and research.
During the visit, the delegation met senior colleagues from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the Global Engagement Office, toured teaching and clinical facilities, and explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration through scholarships, research partnerships, and training pathways.
Professor Christopher Tredwin said: “These scholarships create life-changing opportunities for the students and strengthen our research and clinical links with Iraq. We are delighted to welcome talented Iraqi students into our community, which is proud to offer an open-door policy to all of them. We look forward to supporting their success and to building a long-term partnership that benefits patients and dental education in both countries.”
Queen Mary’s Institute of Dentistry is ranked first in London and joint first in the UK for research environment in Dentistry in REF 2021—supported by world-class clinical training across sites in Whitechapel, the Isle of Dogs, Stratford and Homerton. The Institute also holds a Platinum Watermark for Public Engagement and contributes to community health across east London.
