Queen Mary University of London expands partnership with leading law firm Mishcon de Reya
Queen Mary’s School of Law has strengthened its longstanding partnership with leading law firm Mishcon de Reya LLP, which has generously pledged a donation of £100,000 spread over four years to sponsor ‘The Mishcon de Reya LLM Scholarship’ at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS).

The Scholarship is linked to an executive education programme recently launched on International Asset Tracing and Recovery, which is being offered in conjunction with Mishcon and Blackstone Chambers.
Mishcon de Reya is one of London’s leading commercial law firms which specialises in International Asset Tracing and Recovery. The Scholarship and programme build on Mishcon de Reya’s existing partnership with Queen Mary in delivering access to law initiatives and tackling discrimination including the Black Justice Project, which offers free legal advice to members of the Black community, LGBTQI+ initiative Pink Law, and SPITE, a "revenge porn" advice service.
Professor Ian Walden, CCLS Director, said: “We are delighted to be so generously supported by Mishcon de Reya. There is a wonderful connection as our founder Sir Roy Goode used to be a Partner in the firm of Victor Mishcon. We are also very excited about the University’s first ever International Asset Tracing and Recovery Course and are grateful for this new partnership.”
Mishcon de Reya Partner Gary Miller, who is leading the new course with Anthony Peto QC of Blackstone Chambers, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to expand our partnership with Queen Mary, building on a long-standing relationship and our joint access to justice initiatives. We are proud to support this new course, which will help legal professionals hone their skills and develop best practice approaches to asset tracing and recovery.”
The International Asset Tracing and Recovery Executive Education course is a five-day programme running in November 2021 that helps participants build upon existing expertise in this area by focusing on the legal and practical aspects that are of critical importance to the practitioner. It is being delivered by two of the leading professionals in the legal world, Tony Peto QC, Joint Head of Blackstone Chambers and Gary Miller, a Partner at Mishcon de Reya and Chairman of the International Fraud Group. Other speakers include Philippa Rees, a Professional Support Lawyer from Mishcon de Reya and Blackstone’s Leona Powell, a leading junior specialising in civil fraud and asset recovery.
Mishcon de Reya has also begun to offer student placements as part of Queen Mary’s innovative undergraduate Law in Practice degree programme. This four-year degree option gives students the opportunity to study for two years at Queen Mary, spend the third year applying their legal knowledge in a paid internship, before returning to Queen Mary for a final year of study.
Dr Nigel Spencer, Professor of Education Innovation and Professional Practice at Queen Mary Department of Law said: “We’re delighted that our students now have the opportunity to spend a year at Mishcon de Reya as part of the Law in Practice programme. The programme underpins our employability philosophy of collapsing the distance between the classroom and the workplace, allowing students to build practical skills with an extended period of ‘learning by doing’. Working at a firm as innovative as Mishcon de Reya also gives them a great insight into what the future of legal service provision looks like.”
