An academic leadership development programme for current and aspiring Programme Directors at Queen Mary, designed to build confidence, strategic insight, and leadership capability.

Through three comprehensive units, participants will explore a variety of topics and perspectives, deepening their understanding of their role and advancing their leadership journey.

This programme is aimed at current and aspiring Programe Directors.

Programme Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme participants will be able to:

  1. Articulate and engage with the strategic ambitions, mission, Strategic Plan and Key Performance Indicators of QMUL .
  2. Use knowledge of the external context in which the University is operating to inform leadership decisions according to role. 
  3. Recognise and reflect on different perspectives and experiences of leaders within the community. 
  4. Identify actions that can support the delivery of the University strategic plan and our supporting strategies according to role / sphere of influence. 
  5. Identify and practise approaches to enhance personal leadership practice(s) in the University. 
  6. Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of personal leadership approaches. 

Content Overview

Each unit consists of a day-long core session and a half-day workshop. Please scroll down for dates and times for upcoming cohorts.

Unit 1

Understanding and Leading in your role to deliver the QM Strategy 2030

In Unit 1 we will cover a range of topics to support you in getting the most from your role as a leader whilst delivering on our shared QM vision. Topics include:

  • Translating strategy into action
  • Understanding the Programme Director role
  • Curriculum 2030: implementing programme design principles
  • Leadership Challenge Project

Unit 2

Enhancing your Leadership Skills to deliver the QM Strategy 2030

In Unit 2 we will explore your personal leadership values and style to uncover your strengths and what energises you. Topics include:

  • Leadership values and the academic role
  • What makes a good education leader?
  • Influencing and communicating
  • Self-awareness and emotional intelligence

Unit 3

Building Reputation and Stakeholder Engagement to deliver the QM Strategy 2030

In Unit 3 we will look at your role and school in the wider context of the university and in particular building reputation and stakeholder engagement for your school. Topics include:

  • Leadership case studies
  • Academic reputation
  • Inclusive leadership
  • AI integrated education
  • Financial management

Leadership Challenge Project

As part of the program, you will undertake a leadership challenge project designed to create a meaningful impact on your educational priorities. Throughout the program, you will have opportunities to develop and refine your project, reflecting on its progress and outcomes.

At the close event, you will present your project's achievements and future plans to a panel of senior academics, fostering insightful discussion and feedback.
