In September 2025, I had the opportunity to attend the European Society of Psychology Learning and Teaching (ESPLAT) conference in Münster, thanks to the SBBS funding for Scholarship.

At this conference, I presented two different pieces of work: the first was a talk about work with Paraskevi Argyriou and Farees Muhammed Adam-Saïb, on the role of gestures and motivation in learning from instructional videos. The talk was scheduled alongside talks entirely focussed on asynchronous learning, with lots of really valuable insights from academics working in distance learning universities as well as on blended learning programmes.

The second piece of work I presented was a poster co-created with three of our Psychology students, Olivia Adelabu, Imaan Jalal, and Dhwani Shah. During the poster session, there was a real range of speakers and topics, and the poster blitz introductions helped people get an overview of the different posters to go to.  I had very fruitful conversations with people from Amsterdam and Glasgow.

The conference committee created a diverse schedule with workshops and discussion sections on top of the usual talks and posters, and they organised a lovely and accessible conference dinner, plus a city tour to give us all a lovely overview of Münster. The conference overall was a very friendly environment, with a real range of attendees from across Europe, from students to senior academic staff, and everyone I talked to was supportive and enthusiastic about scholarship!

Gwen attended the European Society of Psychology Learning and Teaching (ESPLAT) conference after receiving funding from the School of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (SBBS) Scholarship Fund.
