A Walk in Hackney: Migration, Memory, and Feminist Urban Futures
When: Tuesday, May 19, 2026, 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
Where: Dalston Square (https://maps.app.goo.gl/45bjAvEwYuUfJwGL9)
This 1.5-hour walking seminar explores Hackney as a living archive shaped by migration, labour, and collective struggle.
Moving through Dalston, Ridley Road, and Simpson House, participants trace how diverse migrants have produced the borough culturally and materially via work, music, street art, food, activism, and care.
Structured around Memory, Labour, Resistance, Belonging, and Feminist Futures, the walk uses feminist and decolonial approaches, viewing walking as a method to read layered histories, gentrification, and persistent infrastructures of care. It concludes with conversation over shared food at a Turkish/Kurdish restaurant. Facilitated by Dr. Feride Kumbasar, feminist migration scholar and community researcher.
