A New Home for the School of Business and Management
Queen Mary University of London is developing a new, purpose-built home for the School of Business and Management (SBM), marking a significant investment in the future of teaching, learning and research. The six-storey building is expected to be completed in 2027 and will provide a modern environment designed to support the School’s continued growth and ambition.

Designed by Nicholas Hare Architects and constructed by Willmott Dixon, the new building will deliver flexible, inclusive and high-quality learning and study spaces. It will support innovative teaching approaches, collaborative working and an enhanced student experience, ensuring that facilities match the academic excellence of the School.
The building will also house the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre (LAC), which provides free and accessible legal advice to local communities in east London and beyond. Delivered by undergraduate and postgraduate law students, supported by qualified lawyers, the LAC enables students to gain valuable practical experience while helping to improve access to justice and strengthen Queen Mary’s civic mission.
“This project represents more than just bricks and mortar. It is a bold investment in our academic future and a clear statement of our commitment to excellence in education, research and innovation. It will help us to open the doors of opportunity, transform lives, address inequalities and make new discoveries.” - Professor Colin Bailey, President and Principal of Queen Mary University of London
The School of Business and Management has been welcoming students for over 20 years and is recognised for its strong commitment to the public good. The School works closely with local businesses, charities, community organisations and entrepreneurs to improve opportunities for those who live and work in the local area. In 2021, SBM was recognised by the UK’s Chartered Association of Business Schools as an exemplary business school for its contribution to public value.
Queen Mary University of London has been ranked the best university in the UK for social mobility by the Sutton Trust, with the School of Business and Management ranked number one among business schools in this area. The School continues to strengthen its community links, welcoming pupils from across London and actively promoting access to higher education.
With around 3,000 students and 100 academic staff, and continued growth planned, the School has outgrown its current accommodation in the Francis Bancroft Building. The new facility will provide a fit-for-purpose home that reflects the School’s momentum and ambition, offering high-quality, flexible study and teaching spaces that particularly benefit local students who may lack suitable study environments at home.
The new School of Business and Management building represents an important step in supporting Queen Mary’s academic mission and long-term commitment to inclusion, excellence and community engagement.
