Students from the School of Business and Management recently came together for an Industry Spotlight event organised by Dr Mina Tajvidi, designed to bridge the gap between academic study and the realities of the graduate job market.

The session, tailored for MSc Marketing and final-year BSc Marketing and Management students, brought together a distinctive mix of industry professionals, Queen Mary alumni, and recent graduates (from the two programmes) who have successfully secured roles across London’s competitive marketing sector.

At the heart of the event was a shared purpose: to provide honest, practical insight into the transition from university to employment. Recent graduates reflected on their time at Queen Mary, highlighting how their academic experience, skills development, and exposure to real-world challenges supported their progression into professional roles.

A panel discussion and interactive Q&A created space for open dialogue, allowing students to engage directly with speakers and explore different career paths. The discussion focused in particular on employer expectations when recruiting graduates, offering clear, actionable advice on how students can position themselves effectively in the job market.

Students responded very positively to the session, with many highlighting its relevance and impact. Feedback described the event as “insightful”, “engaging”, and “highly useful”, with several students noting the value of hearing candid reflections from those who had recently navigated the same journey.

With around 55 students in attendance, the event underscored the School’s ongoing commitment to enhancing employability through meaningful industry engagement. By connecting current students with alumni and professionals, the Industry Spotlight series continues to provide valuable perspectives that support students in shaping their future careers with confidence.
