Accessibility statement for Queen Mary University

This accessibility statement applies to the core www.qmul.ac.uk website that is built in the “One Web” HTML templates.

This website is run by Queen Mary University. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

• change colours, contrast levels and fonts
• zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
• navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
• navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
• listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand..

How accessible this website is

Most of the core website is accessible and usable.

Our latest accessibility audit identified that the majority of the site meets accessibility expectations, with the remaining issues concentrated in a small number of shared templates and components. Addressing these components will improve accessibility across multiple pages and user journeys.

Some parts of the website are not yet fully accessible. Known issues include:

• keyboard focus indicators that are difficult to see or inconsistent
• some keyboard navigation and focus order issues
• some forms where labels or instructions are missing or unclear
• some interactive controls with touch targets that are smaller than recommended
• some decorative images that are incorrectly exposed to assistive technologies or images where alternative text requires improvement
• some older PDF documents that are not fully accessible.

Queen Mary University is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA due to the non-compliances listed below.

Content not within the scope of accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018.

Currently, Queen Mary produces around 8500 PDFs every year. We have assessed the cost of fixing these documents, and believe that doing so would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. 

To ensure accessibility guidelines are met going forward, website editors have been provided with the following tools and resources:  

• Silktide platform 
• Accessibility training course 
• Online resource hub 
• Regular web users forum
• Periodical accessibility audits 

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

Our accessibility improvement programme

Accessibility improvements are delivered as part of an ongoing programme of work in 2026

Current priorities include:

• improving keyboard navigation and visible focus
• improving form labels and instructions
• increasing interactive target sizes
• improving alternative text guidance and implementation
• resolving issues in shared website components so improvements benefit multiple services and user journeys.

When we plan to fix these issues

We are currently working through our list of non-compliances on a sprint basis. We will be actioning these throughout quarters three and four.
