GO Study Abroad Bursary

We support our students with the highest financial need in their plans to go abroad on exchange through an additional funding source: the GO Study Abroad Bursary.

We want all of our students to be able to enjoy the international opportunities we offer and get the most out of their period abroad. To achieve this, Queen Mary makes a Global Opportunities Study Abroad Bursary (GO SAB) fund available on an annual basis, to assist students who might be facing difficulties in meeting the costs of an exchange programme of studies abroad.

GO Study Abroad Bursary for 2026/27 mobility: Students should attend the GPO Managed Funding virtual talk taking place Thursday 29 January 2026 to learn full details (slides will be made available on QMplus). Following this and in order to be considered for the GO Study Abroad Bursary, students must submit the GPO Managed Funding application form by 01 March 2026 at 23.59 local UK time. Students known to the GPO team who are forecasted to go abroad will receive an individual invitation link once the application form opens (note: this is the same form needed to apply for Turing Scheme funding).

(2025/26 mobility: allocations are completed, students have been informed and payments made. Late applications are no longer possible and will not be considered.)

Effective for mobility periods taking place during the 2026/27 academic year, any student who is completing a study placement at a partner university during the next academic year and who qualifies in priority group (1) according to our Funding priority groups system during the current academic year may be considered for the GO Study Abroad Bursary if they successfully complete Queen Mary's GPO Managed Funding application form by the relevant deadline (see above). Students are usually contacted with the application details in January/February for exchanges taking place in the following academic year.

The GO Study Abroad Bursary's exact amount varies each year but has historically been within the range of £400-£480 per semester.

Allocation decisions are made during the spring, and students are informed of the individual award amounts in late spring/early summer. The GPO team then shares news of the outcome with the confirmed amount with successful applicants along with two forms (Grant Agreement for signing, BACS form to collect bank details). The student must complete, sign and submit both forms by a set deadline late spring/early summer in order to be eligible to receive the award. Recipients then receive the stated amount in one payment instament, typically early summer.

To maximise the value of the GO Study Abroad Bursary, all students receiving a Queen Mary Bursary for their degree as well as a loan from Student Finance should also systematically apply for the Student Finance Travel Grant where eligible to do so. Please see the relevant sections on the Finance landing page to learn more.
