About 

National Taiwan University (NTU), established in 1928 and located in Taipei, is Taiwan's public research university, renowned for its excellence in education, research, and innovation.

The university has 11 colleges and offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Its main campus features historic architecture alongside modern facilities. With a student body of over 33,000, including thousands of international students, NTU has a vibrant campus life, hosting various cultural events, clubs, and volunteer opportunities. The university consistently ranks among the top institutions in Asia and the world.

Location

National Taiwan University (NTU) is located in Da'an District, in the heart of Taipei, Taiwan's capital. The main campus has a blend of historic architecture and modern facilities, including libraries, research centres, and the National Taiwan University Hospital.

Taipei is a dynamic metropolis where Japanese colonial lanes, bustling shopping streets, and contemporary skyscrapers coexist. The city is also renowned for its vibrant street-food culture and lively night markets, including the expansive Shilin Night Market. It is also close to Yangmingshan National Park, offering NTU students a scenic escape with hot springs, hiking trails, and volcanic landscapes.

Well-connected by the Taipei Metro, buses, and bike-sharing networks, NTU’s central location offers students easy access to parks, cafés and cultural sites. With its prime location in Taipei, rich academic resources, and vibrant cultural surroundings, NTU provides an ideal environment for learning, research, and personal growth.

This is an approximation determined by the number of applications received for this destination during the last academic year versus the total number of exchange spaces available to Queen Mary students.

Language of Instruction

Mandarin Chinese is the official language and the most widely spoken language in Taiwan.

Many courses at NTU are taught in English. They require English proficiency at CEFR B2 (For example, TOEFLiBT: 72 or IELTS: 5.5)

Many courses are also taught in Chinese. If you wish to study in Chinese you must have at least CEFR B1 (For example, Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL): Band B Level 3 or Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK): Level 5).

Free Chinese language courses are offered for exchange students. You can take complimentary Chinese language courses with NTU credits.

Academic Calendar

The academic year is divided into two semesters.

  • Fall semester: early August - late January.
  • Spring semester: early February - late July.

Courses

  • The course list for the first/second semester is available only from the beginning of August/January.
  • Students should make a preliminary plan based on previous courses offered and adjust the plan when the latest course list is available.
  • For questions regarding a specific field/course, please contact the relevant department/course instructor directly.

Restrictions

The College of Medicine prefers 1st-year and 2nd-year undergraduate students with high-level Chinese proficiency.

 The following courses are not open to exchange/visiting students:

- Practicum courses offered by all departments.

- Practice courses offered by the Department of Chemistry.

- All GMBA required/core courses.

- All EMBA and EIMBA courses.

-Courses offered by Center for Teaching Education and all Academic Programs (學分學程)

- School of Professional Education and Continuing Studies (進修推廣學院)

- Summer Session (暑修) and Summer College (夏季學院) courses.

- International College, D-School and Center for General Education are not open for the exchange students to apply.

Credits

Students must enrol on a full course load equivalent to 60 Queen Mary credits for the semester/120 for a full academic year. Please see our required credit load document for full details.

Accommodation

During the application period of NTU exchange student program, students can apply for on-campus housing. However, accommodation is not guaranteed due to the limited number of dormitory rooms.

Private accommodation: Queen Mary students who intend to look for private accommodation are advised to follow the partner’s guidance as soon as possible to begin their accommodation search safely.
