Research Publishing Policy
The New Queen Mary Research Publishing Policy comes into force on 01 January 2026

Who does it apply to:
Applies to all members of Queen Mary staff and students, undertaking, supporting or facilitating research at the university, and publishing outputs as a result of their work.
What does it apply to:
Applies to all publishing submitted on or after 01 January 2026; a rights retention element of the policy applies to journal articles and conference papers.
What is the policy:
- Under the university Research Publishing Policy, all outputs of research must be recorded in the Research Information System: Elements
- The policy recognises the author's freedom to choose the appropriate venue for publication
- The policy reinforces the commitment not to use the venue of publication as the sole indicator for assessment
- Accepted manuscripts of journal articles and conference papers must be deposited to Queen Mary Research Online via Elements
- Journal articles and conference papers submitted after 01 January 2026 will be subject to a rights retention requirement, assigning a non-exclusive right to the university to make the accepted manuscript available with 0 embargo, and under a Creative Commons licence via the institutional repository Queen Mary Research Online
- Library Services is the owner of the policy and responsible for its implementation
- Library Services is contacting publishers to provide notice of the retention element of the policy
