Queen Mary University of London welcomed alumni, students and staff to the latest event in its Alumni Angles series exploring the role of civic leadership and civil society in addressing some of today’s most urgent social challenges.
‘Leading with Purpose: Civic Society and Social Change’ featured a conversation with Matt Hyde OBE (BA English, 1996), Chief Executive of the Lloyds Bank Foundation and former Chief Executive of the Scouts. Drawing on a career spanning the charity, youth and civic sectors, Matt reflected on public trust, social cohesion and the evolving nature of leadership in civil society.
The event took place on Tuesday 10 February in the Peston Lecture Theatre on Queen Mary’s Mile End campus, with Matt speaking to a live audience, followed by a reception that offered opportunities for networking and discussion.
In conversation with Dr Philippa Lloyd, Vice-Principal (Policy and Strategic Partnerships), Matt explored how charities, universities, businesses and communities can work together to deliver meaningful and lasting social change. He shared insights from his leadership roles across the voluntary sector, including his time at the Scouts, where he led the organisation through a period of record membership growth, particularly in areas of deprivation.
Matt also discussed his current work at the Lloyds Bank Foundation, which supports community-led organisations through grant funding and capacity building, and his role as Co-Founder of The Big Help Out, a national initiative to boost volunteering across the UK.
The evening opened with remarks from Professor Colin Bailey CBE, President and Principal of Queen Mary University of London, who highlighted the importance of civic values and alumni leadership in advancing the University’s mission.
With Queen Mary playing a leading role in the national Civic University (Civic 2.0) initiative, the event offered a timely opportunity to showcase how the work of its alumni contributes to the University’s wider civic ambitions and the communities it serves.
