Training

Developing a broad range of research and transferable skills is a key component of the Barts Charity Doctoral Training Programme. Alongside their research projects, students take part in a structured and progressive training programme designed to support their development as researchers, collaborators and future leaders in health research. The programme focuses on a number of core training areas, outlined below.

This is complemented by an individual learning needs analysis, enabling each student to create a bespoke development plan tailored to their research interests, professional goals and long-term career aspirations.

Today's health challenges require collaboration across disciplines and sectors. The programme provides opportunities for students to work with clinicians, researchers, patients, public contributors, and other stakeholders, fostering an interdisciplinary approach to research. Through workshops, roundtables, and engagement activities, students develop the skills needed to build meaningful partnerships and maximise the impact of their work.

In addition to research training, students are supported to develop the professional and transferable skills needed for future career success. Training in areas such as leadership, communication, project management, public engagement, and career planning helps students prepare for a wide range of opportunities in academia, healthcare, industry, policy, and beyond.

Centre for Early Career Researchers

The Centre for Early Career Researchers supports Queen Mary’s doctoral researchers throughout their studies, offering a wide range of training and development opportunities to help them excel in their research and build the skills needed for future careers in academia, industry and beyond.

The Barts Charity Doctoral Training Programme works closely with Queen Mary’s Centre for Early Career Researchers to ensure that DTP students benefit from the wide range of training and development opportunities available across the university. In addition, where appropriate, training and events delivered through the DTP are opened to the wider postgraduate research community, helping to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary connections.
