Examination boards

Examination boards are formal committees that oversee the integrity of assessment and ensure that academic standards are maintained. Among other work, they confirm student marks, progression decisions, and the award of degrees. They ensure that assessment and results are fair, consistent, and aligned with the policies and requirements of the University and its external regulators.

This page gives general information on examination boards; for more details, see:

Subject Examination Boards (SEBs)

These boards sit within academic schools or institutes. They set assessments, oversee marking, agree marks, confirm progression outcomes, and make recommendations for awards. SEBs are attended by external examiners who provide independent input to help ensure standards are maintained in line with sector expectations.

Degree Examination Boards (DEBs)

These university-level boards approve recommendations from SEBs for awards and classifications. DEBs have a particular responsibility for ensuring consistency of approach between different SEBs in line with Queen Mary's policies and procedures, and for sharing good practice.

This two-level structure ensures that decisions are robust, transparent, and consistent across Queen Mary. Both SEBs and DEBs operate under the Academic Regulations and Assessment Handbook, which set out detailed procedures for marking, moderation, and handling exceptional cases such as extenuating circumstances.
