Jamila Kassam

Jamila Kassam is an exceptional research leader whose strategic vision and operational expertise have transformed research delivery and growth within her unit. Under her leadership, the research portfolio has expanded dramatically from £4 million to over £48 million alongside significant growth in staff and research capacity. She plays a pivotal role in shaping strategy, strengthening NHS partnerships, and developing innovative training and public engagement initiatives. Known for her rigorous approach to governance and inclusive leadership style, Jamila has created a collaborative, forward-thinking research environment that supports both excellence and accessibility.

Lilinaz Rouhani

Lilinaz Rouhani provides outstanding leadership in research data management, playing a critical role in strengthening Queen Mary’s institutional data infrastructure and performance across REF, KEF and HEBCI. She has led transformative improvements in data assurance processes, ensuring accuracy, transparency and compliance in high-stakes national submissions. Her work has significantly enhanced institutional decision-making and contributed to measurable improvements in KEF outcomes. By embedding sustainable, collaborative approaches to complex data challenges, Lilinaz has helped elevate the university’s research credibility and culture.

Paul Newman

Paul Newman is a highly valued member of the Centre for Early Career Researchers whose work has significantly enhanced the training and development of early career researchers. Through his organisational expertise, he has streamlined administrative processes, leading to substantial increases in participation and engagement across training programmes. His work has enabled the expansion of accessible, high-quality development opportunities for doctoral researchers, while also improving funding processes and supporting the launch of the Centre for Early Career Researchers. Paul is widely recognised for his collaborative approach, attention to detail and commitment to supporting the research community.

Ruby Lathey

Ruby Lathey delivers outstanding research management support across the Centre for Preventive Neurology, playing a central role in grant development, project delivery and operational coordination. Her meticulous approach ensures strong governance, financial oversight and timely delivery across complex research portfolios, including major multi-million-pound grants. She has contributed directly to funding success and improved research efficiency, while also introducing systems and processes that enhance transparency and collaboration. Known for her collegial and supportive approach, Ruby is instrumental in strengthening both research outputs and team culture.

Sarah Molloy

Sarah Molloy is a leader in Library Services whose work underpins the infrastructure supporting research at Queen Mary. She has driven the development and implementation of key research systems and open access frameworks, enabling effective reporting, compliance and dissemination of research outputs. Her leadership has improved engagement with research tools and strengthened institutional policies on open research and publications. Through major initiatives such as the Centre for Digital Collections and cross-institutional collaborations, Sarah has significantly enhanced the accessibility, visibility and impact of the university’s research.

Biological Services Unit (Sue Keefe & Jordi Lopez Tremoleda)

The Biological Services Unit, led by Sue Keefe and Jordi Lopez Tremoleda, provides essential infrastructure and expertise that underpins a substantial proportion of Queen Mary’s biomedical research. Supporting hundreds of researchers and contributing to over £80 million in research activity, their work ensures the highest standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance and scientific integrity. Alongside operational leadership, they actively contribute to policy development and promote alternatives to animal research through engagement with national organisations. Their dedication and expertise sustain a critical research environment that enables life-saving scientific advances.

Vicky Byers

Vicky Byers is a key driver of Queen Mary’s success in European research funding, providing expert guidance across complex applications including Horizon Europe, ERC and MSCA schemes. Her strategic oversight has directly contributed to securing millions in funding and strengthening the university’s international research profile. She has developed innovative resources that improve access to funding information and streamline processes, while also mentoring researchers and supporting proposal development at all levels. Vicky’s collaborative approach and deep expertise have made her an invaluable contributor to the institution’s global research ambitions.
