Reflecting on My Journey as a TELT Student Ambassador

Becoming a TELT Ambassador has definitely been one of the highlights of my time at Queen Mary and my academic journey. I applied for this role because I wanted to support other students, but I didn’t realise how much confidence and creativity I would gain in the process.
I was heavily involved in Welcome Week and the International Welcome Day, where I helped greet new students, answer questions, and guide people across campus. What started as simply giving directions quickly turned into meaningful conversations. I met students, many of whom were nervous or unsure about their first day. Being able to reassure them, share my own experiences, and see them relax made the role feel truly worthwhile. I also supported live induction sessions, helping deliver presentations to large groups of students and it was rewarding seeing positive engagement and knowing that new students felt at ease using technologies which can be complicated at first. Although public speaking seemed daunting at first, over time I felt myself effortlessly becoming more confident as I learned how to keep audiences engaged and make everyone feel included.
One of my favourite parts of the role was helping to run interactive giveaway stalls, where students could win tote bags, sweets or chocolates through a spin-the-wheel activity in exchange for engaging with TELT on Instagram. It was a fun way to bring people together and make campus feel more welcoming.
What I loved most was how much freedom we had to contribute ideas, whether it was planning incentives, supporting students in person or helping with social media engagement. Every shift felt meaningful, knowing I was helping someone settle into university life.
This was my first ever ambassador role, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity. I especially want to thank Annette, John and Abi, who I worked closely with throughout my time in the team. Their patience, encouragement and trust made me feel valued from day one. They always took the time to guide me, answer questions and allow me to grow at my own pace, and that support made all the difference
Being a TELT Ambassador didn’t just allow me to uplift others, it helped me grow into a more confident communicator and proactive team member as well as make friends along the way. I feel proud to have been part of the TELT community, and I would recommend the role to anyone who enjoys connecting with others and making a positive impact!
