Reversing the narrative through a series of powerful short films and an open conversation on who we call 'Hard to Reach"

Presented within the Whitechapel Gallery Backyard Biennial: East

Join us for an evening of powerful community-led film screenings and discussion, presented within the Backyard Biennial: East.

Developed by Mile End Community Project, Hard to Reach: Reversing the Narrative challenges the assumptions behind the term "hard to reach" by showcasing authentic stories created with and by local communities.

The programme features a curated selection of award-winning short films exploring migration, identity, stereotypes, belonging, youth experiences, and the everyday realities of life in East London. From stories of migration and community to chicken and chips, each film offers a unique perspective on the people and places that shape our neighbourhoods.

Following the screenings, audiences are invited to stay for an informal facilitated discussion, creating space to reflect on the films, share experiences, and explore themes of representation, access, community, and culture.

Whether you're passionate about film, interested in social issues, or simply curious to experience compelling stories from East London, this event offers an opportunity to engage with powerful community voices, meet others, and be part of an open and thought-provoking conversation.
