DERI is based in Empire House in Whitechapel, Queen Mary University of London's dedicated home for interdisciplinary AI and data science research.

Designed to support collaboration, Empire House offers bright, open-plan workspaces alongside a range of informal and formal meeting areas. The building includes bookable meeting rooms, collaboration pods, social spaces, kitchens on every floor, secure cycle storage and shower facilities, creating an environment where researchers, students and partners can connect, collaborate and innovate.

Research computing

DERI manages access to Queen Mary's high-performance computing (HPC) resources, providing researchers with the advanced computational infrastructure needed for data-intensive research, artificial intelligence, machine learning and large-scale modelling. These facilities support cutting-edge research across DERI and the wider University.

Empire House

Originally designed by architect Hume Victor Kerr in the 1930s, Empire House has been carefully restored to combine its distinctive Art Deco heritage with modern research and collaboration spaces. Today it provides an inspiring home for one of the UK's leading interdisciplinary AI research institutes.

The building’s original architect, Hume Victor Kerr, was responsible for a number of Deco buildings in the area. Queen Mary are proud to give this one a new lease of life, bringing it up to date with the digital environment of the 21st century.
