Neurological conditions are among the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century. The Centre for Preventive Neurology (CPN) aims to reduce disease burden and improve quality of life in those living with, and at risk of, neurological disease by shifting the focus to early detection, intervention, and prevention. The CPN brings together a dynamic, multidisciplinary team carrying out research across neurological disease, primarily dementia, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson’s disease.
Centre Leadership
Our Research
Our research approaches include traditional and genetic epidemiology, real world and health records data, imaging and laboratory biomarkers, health psychology, qualitative and design approaches, underpinned by an active programme of patient and public involvement. We aim to inform and test approaches aimed at reducing the burden of neurological disease.
The Preventive Neurology Unit, PNU, the predecessor of the CPN, was formed in 2017 following investment from Barts Charity, achieving centre status in 2023. Focusing on disease determinants, early detection, and health inequalities across neurological disease, we pay particular attention to make sure that those taking part in our research activities reflect our local East London population. Ensuring that people from groups commonly under-represented in research are at the centre of our involvement, research and engagement activities is core.
Researchers within the CPN have been awarded >£10 million in grant income from funders including NIHR, MRC, pharmaceutical partners, and disease specific charities. The CPN is recognised as an outstanding environment for PhD students and early career researchers, successfully training and developing PhD students to degree award and subsequent research careers. We offer a programme of regular PhD seminars, journal club, presentation opportunities, methods clinics and opportunities to collaborate both internally and externally.
