GREAT Programme

Generalism, Reflection and Empathy in Academic Teaching (GREAT programme)
We role-model a student-centred interactive approach to the workshops drawing on your own learning and educator experiences. We will share ideas, try things out, share experiences of educating students, reflect together on what is working, what can be improved and engage the pedagogical literature.

Sessions will mainly be face to face, with possibly one virtual session to explore facilitating learning in the online space. 

 

It has already changed how I approach teaching- making it more student focussed, providing different mediums of learning content, and changing the way I offer feedback and also receive feedback. 

I have learned so much about the theory behind medical education and learned a lot about myself as a student and educator. Very useful techniques and resources have been shown and I will use these going forward. 

These 5 broad programme themes relate to the Associate Fellowship of the HEA as detailed in the UK Professional Standards Framework.
A1 Designing and planning learning activities

How do we welcome students into the clinical workplace, establish a learning culture, make it a safe place to ask questions, turn clinical experiences into learning moments?

A2 Facilitating learning

How do we create a good learning environment either face to face in the clinic or during virtual or remote consultations or tutorials?

A3 Assess and give feedback to learners

How do we create a good feedback environment where tutors invite feedback and students are able to learn and grow from the affirmative and constructive feedback a tutor might give to them?

A4 Developing great learning environments and supporting students

How might we best support our struggling students? How do we know if a student is struggling? How do we humanise and engage students in the learning experience - in particular through technology - jamboards, mentimeter, miro mind maps etc and through creative enquiry processes?

A5 Pedagogy, educational scholarship and evaluating educational practice

How do we develop as educators? How might we apply for the AFHEA? How do we continue to innovate and learn from practice?

This course draws on design-based methods, creative enquiry, systems thinking, pedagogy of kindness and human factors.

There will be a new focus on virtual pedagogy – how best to engage students in the virtual learning environment. We will also address planning, facilitating learning, effective learning environments, feedback, assessment and evaluation.
