Enterprise Architecture

Enterprise Architecture aims to be a trusted strategic partner that enables Queen Mary to deliver transformative, sustainable and inclusive digital change both now and into the future. We do this by aligning technology, data, application and business process architectures with institutional goals and enabling better decision-making across all levels.

Why is this important?

UK universities face constant pressure to do more with less. Getting technology decisions right and making sure they work together is essential to delivering the best possible experience for students, staff and researchers.

Enterprise Architecture ensures every technology investment is well-considered, properly integrated and clearly aligned with Queen Mary's wider goals, turning technology into a genuine driver of our mission rather than just an operational cost.

What challenges do we face?

QMUL's technology landscape comprises hundreds of interconnected systems that must evolve continuously to support our mission, across professional services, research and teaching and learning. Without enterprise-level coordination, technology decisions risk creating duplicated investments, incompatible systems, security gaps and unsustainable technical debt.

Budget constraints mean we cannot afford redundant solutions or costly integration failures, while regulatory demands around AI, data protection and cyber security require consistent governance.

Our challenge as EA is to ensure that technology decisions are strategically aligned, financially prudent, technically sound and appropriately risk-managed – enabling innovation while maintaining coherence across the enterprise.
