Building an Inclusive Community

Staff Networks

Staff Networks are places where people with shared identities and backgrounds can connect with colleagues and make positive change across the University. They can fulfil several roles including providing peer support and a forum for social interaction, as well as working alongside the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Team to positively impact staff and student experience.

Queen Mary recognises that having active and engaged staff networks can play an integral part in achieving our mission to become the most inclusive university of our kind, anywhere.

Managers play an important role in supporting the promotion of staff networks by signposting colleagues to them and allowing time for participation in network activities. All Queen Mary colleagues can also contribute to and support our staff networks. These networks provide a safe, supportive space for colleagues who share common characteristics or experiences. They offer a platform to share perspectives, raise concerns, and influence University policies and culture. In addition, they play a key role in shaping strategies that promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.

If you would like to know more about a specific network, please follow the links on this page.

EDI Forum
In 2024, Queen Mary launched the EDI Team Forum. This initiative was designed, by the EDI Team, as a co-creation group that provides a platform for collaborative dialogue, sharing good practice, and experience of EDI matters. Through this new initiative, Queen Mary aims to provide a consultative and reflective voice and channel for staff and students to discuss ideas, challenges, good practice, and concerns related to EDI. The Forum is open to all staff and students and aims to provide a safe environment for sharing ideas and recommendations.

The engagement of line managers in EDI Forum sessions is extremely important to ensure we receive input/ viewpoints of managers. Line managers can also support this initiative by promoting the Forum and enabling colleagues in their team to attend.
